Watchdog to companion
Eisenmann later said he acquired London as a watchdog. His books describe a first year in which he began to recognise the dog’s unusual responsiveness. They preserve his memory of the beginning, rather than an exact date for it.
Baseball, a nightclub and an office
In Eisenmann’s account, London then accompanied him through baseball work and a Los Angeles nightclub, followed by a period in a newspaper office. Baseball was more than a backdrop: it was where London began to be seen as Chuck’s clever, dependable companion. The exact dates, nightclub location and newspaper remain open questions.
A firm public anchor
By 1955, contemporary material placed Eisenmann and London together in Hollywood. That is the earliest secure public anchor currently used on the site. It supports the broad outline without settling where London came from or exactly when he entered Eisenmann’s life.
